2017 Riders

LAUREN WISSMAN

Jennifer Kosatka

My local team is: BFF Bikes Racing

My day job is: BFF Bikes Owner

I'm ridiculously talented when it comes to: Cutting to the chase (this is a nice way of saying I am impatient).

Something not a lot of people know about me is: It took me FOREVER to learn to ride a bike. I had training wheels until I was 10.

I first considered myself a cyclist when: I started riding my bike to work. To me, anyone who rides somewhat regularly is a cyclist!

My favorite phrase that guides me and gives me inspiration is: "Actually, I can" which is a motto from Liv. It quickly squashes any doubt and comes in handy when I am pushing myself to what feels like a limit and I start to question my ability to go on.

My nickname is: #feelthebyrne

My local team is: Spidermonkey Cycling

My day job is: Architectural Designer

The best experience I have had on a bike was: Riding a fat bike up a snow-covered switchback snowmobile trail to the base of a frozen waterfall in Telluride, CO.

Something not a lot of people know about me is: I went to sailing camp when I was 8.

I first considered myself a cyclist when: I joined a cycling team and started matching everyone – also when I started ONLY wearing multi-colored crew socks.

My favorite phrase that guides me and gives me inspiration is: "JFDI" (just f@#$$%# do it)

My nickname is: Wiss, Wissers, Wissman, Ldawg

My local team is: BFF Bikes Racing

My day job is: Analyst for Walgreen Co.

I'm ridiculously talented when it comes to: Knitting cat sweaters.

The best experience I have had involving a bike was: Getting to know all the amazing people in our cycling community.

Something not a lot of people know about me is: I’m half Mexican.

I first considered myself a cyclist when: I finished my first race—I immediately knew I was hooked.

My favorite phrase that guides me and gives me inspiration is: During a hard interval: first half  “I can do this!”… second half “Keep going, you’re almost done!”

My nickname is: Jenny or Jenny Ann

CHRISTINE THORNBURG

My local team is: BFF Bikes Racing

My day job is: Wealth Manager

I'm ridiculously talented when it comes to: Juggling a busy schedule.

The best experience I have had involving a bike was: The amazing climbing I did with my husband this year in the Canary Islands. It made any other climb seem not that bad.

Something not a lot of people know about me is: Left alone, my hair is naturally curly, like really curly.

I'm most proud of: My four kids.

I first considered myself a cyclist when: I didn't get dropped on the local Tuesday night ride.

Rachel Wills

My local team is: Burnham Racing

My day job is: Bike Fitter at Velosmith Bicycle Studio

I'm ridiculously talented when it comes to: Snot rockets, the perfectly roasted golden brown s'mores marshmallow, and spotting a bike fit issue or swim technique error (and applicable remedies).

Something not a lot of people know about me is: I was a synchronized swimmer in high school and like to mess around with old routines at hotel pools.

I'm most proud of: My husband and his service to this country with the US Navy.

I first considered myself a cyclist when: I starting wearing jerseys with sleeves and stopped peeing on my bike?! I am a collegiate swimmer turned triathlete and did my first criterium a week after my first Ironman. The transition to cycling came fairly naturally when I got sick of swimming and realized running was no longer fun! I like the flat, technical, fast criterium races and realized the only reason for climbing a hill (or mountain) was to descend back down.

Maria Larkin

My local team is: Chicago Cuttin Crew

My day job is: Architectural Designer

I'm ridiculously talented when it comes to: Being a conduit of internet humor. I have a gif library that you wouldn’t believe.

I'm most proud of: Helping to organize Women's Midwest Road Race Championships in 2016. It was amazing to see so many people from all backgrounds in cycling come and support that race. I was so proud to see badass women participate, some for the first time, in a tough unforgiving road race and coming out on top. It was a lot of work, and at times it seemed insurmountable, but because of the whole CWEC team and the Chicago cycling community, we pulled it off.

My favorite phrase that guides me and gives me inspiration is:  "Winners get Pizza" - Anon

My nickname is: My friend Sage started calling me ‘Marlar’ one day so I stole that for social media purposes, but I guess the catchphrase that follows me around is ‘mariastinks’, but you’ll have to ask Daphne about that one.
